It
was a beautiful summer evening match on
Wednesday June 29th as the Sport Club UV
40 defeated Roman FC 4 to 0 at Austrian
Park. The pitch is in great shape and
the grass was cut just right making the
ball fast. The Romans started the match
with exactly 11 players as the Sport
Club had six substitutes; an important
factor in the victory. Frank Gablowski
was the first to score for the Sport
Club with a follow-up shot after the
Roman keeper deflected a hard shot from
Randy Bart. Soon to follow was Dave
Fleischer with a PK after a Roman
handball inside the box. Goal number
three came on a throw in by Russ Bunger
(RC) at the corner flag to Mike Brewer,
who lobbed the ball in front of the net.
Basil Badawi was in position and settled
the ball, then knocked it in. The Romans
made an attack which ended in a corner
kick. Keeper Helmut Thielemann made a
great save by knocking down the ball,
then quickly collecting it in front of
the Romans. The whistle soon blew and
the score at the half was 3-0. In the
second half, the Romans settled the ball
down and made some runs on the Sport
Club defense. But their shots were long
and Helmut easily collected them. The
Sport Club regained composure and scored
the 4th goal on a corner kick. Randy
Bart was able to settle the ball and
knock it in.
