The Sportsters started the game well with forwards, Jessie Travino and Frank Gablowski, attacking everything sent their way. The outside midfielders, Randy Bart, and Stuart Kelly did a great job working the ball up the outside of the pitch. The inside midfielders, Joe Arwady and Dave Fleischer, also kept things moving with awesome footwork. The first goal came shortly into the first half when Stuart Kelly broke from a scrum on the far right side and crossed the ball, on the ground, directly in front of the net (picture perfect). With a big stretch, Frank Gablowski pushed the ball into the net. Shortly after the first goal, a collision occurred between our goal keeper, Patrick Weekhout and an opponent just outside of our penalty box. As Patrick recovered, he was given a red card for obstruction, or denying the opponent the opportunity of a chance at a goal. Isn’t that his job? Helmut Thielemann came in to replace Patrick and finished the game in goal. Carpathia was unable to capitalize on our down player due to the ASC fullbacks, Angel Martinez, Brett Gallagher, Chris Born, Mike Lehman, Bill Shelter and stellar performance by Mike Brewer, who kept the score at 1-0 going into the break. The second half started out a bit slower with Carpathia on the attack. But the Sportsters soon picked up steam and were back in the Match. I would say things went back and forth with each team being denied and or missing opportunities and shots. As darkness was approaching, the mosquitoes began their attack and so did Joe Arwady, who rounded the left corner with a pass from Dave Fleischer to push the ball in GOALLLLLL. This really took the steam out to Carpathia as the game ended. Manager Randy Bart commented that it was a good game and everyone hustled! Everyone commented on a great, and fun, first season. Congratulations Over 40 team!!!
