The task would be tough today facing the first place
undefeated Romanians. The Sport club side started at 10 men and held
defense very well. Finally the Romanians broke through with a shot
to take the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Basil Badawi placed the ball to
Rolando Vata who put a high shot out of the reach of the keeper to
tie 1-1. The Romanians struck luck again, a volley pass put over the
defensive wall for a player to run onto and kick a one timer to gain
the lead again. Kevin Hofinger worked a give and go with Mike Fabbri
that put Mike behind the defense and the 2-2 tie at halftime. The
Romanians would strike first again in the second half, and seemed to
be in control, but the sport club side would not be beaten today.
First, the equalizer by Mark Kurzer after Mike Fabbri put him into
space. After waves of pressure for the SC1924 to gain the lead, the
Romanian defense broke down and made a mistake, a defender heading
the ball into his own net with Ed Monley getting credit for the
goal. The defense would hold and push back the Romanian attacks to
keep the 4-3 win. "Starting with 10 players really made us think
about strategy, and we were able to keep them at bay for a while"
Team Manager Chris Stockman said. "We kept playing with them, and
didn't let them get teh upperhand for long. This was
a great team effort today, especially after giving
away the game last week."
