SC 24 U.V. (1)  v.s.  ANCHOR BAY (2)

The flowers are blooming, the bees are buzzing, and the soccer balls are flying, just not in the net, as the Sport Club 1924 UV team started their 2010 season with a loss (2-1).  The match was held at Croatia Park against Anchor Bay Anchors 40.  The pitch was in good shape and the temp was mild as the match started.  The Sportsters controlled the ball for the first 10 minutes until AB had a direct kick from outside the 18.  The ball hit the top post, went straight up, and as Helmut was getting ready to catch it, an AB player jumped up and headed the ball into the net.  Nice play for Anchor Bay.  Shortly after, the Sportsters matched that goal with a nice rebound shot from Joe Arwady.  The Sportsters controlled the ball for the remainder of the first half but could not capitalize on their opportunities.   The second half started a bit slower for both teams as the forwards and mids were tiring from chasing long balls.  AB scored with about 10 minutes left in the match on a long ball from the far right side.  It looked like a pass but landed in the far left corner of the goal.  Despite many attempts after that, the “gods to be” were not allowing the ball into the net for the Sportsters and the game ended.  The Sportsters defense, Bret Gallagher, Angel Martinez, Chris Born, Bill Shelter, and Jessie Travino played hard and did a great job shutting down the AB speedsters.  Helmut Thielemann was in goal for the Sport Club.
